With Thermal Linear Actuator (TLA)
On the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) system, once the transfer case is engaged, the left front axle begins to turn, and the thermal linear actuator is engaged. Thermal Linear actuators create an electrical current that heats the plunger. The left axle and intermediate shaft are connected by spider gears in the differential, and the thermal linear actuator, once heated enough, extends approximately one inch to slide the shift collar and fork over the intermediate shaft to connect it to the right front axle. Both front axles are now turning and 4-wheel drive is fully engaged. When the OEM actuator fails, the shift collar and fork can't connect the right front axle to the intermediate shaft, so the 4-wheel drive never engages.
4x4 Posi-Lok replaces the thermal linear actuator with a cable operated actuator that puts the driver in control of the engagement from inside the cab. After engaging the transfer case, a one inch pull of the 4x4 Posi-Lok cable slides the shift fork and collar to connect the right front axle to the intermediate shaft and 4-wheel drive is engaged! Simply reverse the procedure to disenage 4-wheel drive. 4x4 Posi-Lok also works great with lockers! When the front axle is locked, you can disengage the passenger side in order to make turns without wheel hop.
The TLA is electronically controlled and may disengage when the engine is turned off.
The TLA unit can cause excessive wear on internal components in the differential and may cause other electrical problems.
